The Triad – Language and Meaning

The Power of Focus

Last time, we talked about focus and how the questions we ask guide our attention. I suggested focusing on what you love and appreciate in your new environment, in the country you’ve chosen to live in.

Magnifying Appreciation with Language

Once you’ve found the things you appreciate, now it’s time to put them to work using language. Language is a filter through which we experience life as human beings. For example, a sensation could be labeled as nervousness, fear, or excitement—it might be the same physical feeling, but how we name it will take it in very different directions. The key is to do this consciously.

Using Language to Amplify Gratitude

Let’s take a moment to magnify what we appreciate. Sure, complaints may come automatically, but we can consciously choose to focus on the good. Start with the big picture. My favorite phrase is: “Praise God for my life” or “Praise Christ for my life.” You can substitute where I say “Christ” with whatever aligns with your key values.

This phrase can end with anything—your life, your country. For example, in my case, it might be: “Praise God for Germany” or “Thank God for Germany.” It could be your wife, your surroundings, or specific things you love about your environment. For me, it’s the Cologne Cathedral or the flowers that bloom in early February. I’m originally from Wisconsin, and there are no flowers in early February there! – so I truly appreciate that about being here.

Incorporate Gratitude into Your Routine

By placing your focus on these things and using language to magnify them, you can create a positive shift in your mindset. Make it a daily practice—incorporate it into your morning routine or ritual.

Alright, see you in the next video!
